Thomas: Surviving Heptoblastoma

Throughout Hockey Fights Cancer Month, the Islanders are recognizing people who have overcome giant obstacles and survived this terrible disease. Five of these special survivors are members of the Survivors Facing Forward Program at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York, located in Great Neck, NY. Today, let’s meet Thomas…

Thomas, Heptoblastoma Survivor
Diagnosed at age 3 months

At 3 months old my parents discovered an abnormal mass on the right side of my stomach. I was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma and I began six rounds of chemotherapy that weakened my immune system. As a result I had numerous trips to the emergency room and was readmitted to Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC). My parents tell me that through it all I was a happy and smiley baby.

At age 5 I’m a proud big brother to my sister Claire and I’m looking forward to having a new sibling to play with come December! I’m five years off treatment and a patient of the Survivors Facing Forward program at CCMC. While I have mild to medium hearing loss due to the chemotherapy, I have cool blue hearing aids that match the color of my favorite baseball team – the Mets!

As a leading center of pediatric oncology, the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York sees approximately 200 new cases of childhood cancer every year. This results in hundreds of childhood cancer survivors requiring ongoing care. Survivors Facing Forward is a program designed to meet the complex needs of these survivors, as well as others from the New York area. The program crosses disciplines, providing coordinated access to oncology, endocrinology, pulmonology, cardiology, psychology, nutrition and other specialists as needed.
