New York Islanders - Hockey Fights Cancer Blog

This year, the Islanders Fight Cancer initiative and the numerous children, facilities and awareness organizations who benefit from our annual fundraising events may lose a major source of donations that they normally count on to help meet annual budgets and support their needs because of the current NHL work stoppage. The Islanders organization is still committed to supporting these great charities and important people though. The team is asking fans of the orange & blue to take up this cause on-line, in their communities and wherever else they see fit. Whether it be in your own households, schools or workplaces, we hope you’ll help Long Island’s team give back and support those who need us the most right now.

If you’d like to make a donation to the Islanders Children’s Foundation, which will then be filtered to local cancer hospitals, research facilities and awareness organizations, please CLICK HERE. We’d like you to know a little more about the organizations you’re supporting with these donations, so will feature profiles on them throughout Hockey Fights Cancer Month.

Today, we take a look at six very special organizations that the Islanders are proud to partner with and support: the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the 1 in 9 Hewlett House, We’re Fighting Back, the Lean on Me Breast Cancer Network, Three Strohm Sisters and the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.

Susan G. Komen Foundation

Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.

That promise is now Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1.9 billion since inception in 1982. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, we’re working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® and the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure®, and generous contributions from our partners, sponsors and fellow supporters, we have become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

1 in 9 Hewlett House

1 in 9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition is a grassroots advocacy organization of dedicated volunteers who are working to keep the concerns about the breast cancer epidemic in the forefront. The organization is committed to promoting action towards finding causes and cures, with the eradication of breast cancer as the ultimate mission.

It is the mission of this organization to promote awareness of the breast cancer epidemic through education, outreach, advocacy, and direct support of research, which is being done to find the causes of and cures for breast cancer and other related cancers. Since a high majority of breast cancer incidences fall outside the known risk categories, they are unique in looking at environmental factors as possible causes and in seeking and promoting ways to keep the environment healthy.
