Team Canada got off to a hot start in the preliminary round of the 2013 World Junior Championship, beating Germany 9-3 Wednesday in Ufa, Russia. Islanders prospects Ryan Strome and Griffin Reinhart dressed for Canada, who improved to 1-0 in Group B play.
The Canadians held a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes before finding the back of the net five times in the second period. Strome scored at 13:48 of the middle frame, giving Canada a 6-1 lead at the time. The Germans scored twice before the end of the period, but the game was well in hand for Canada with a 7-3 lead heading into the third.
Strome assisted on two more tallies in the final period, giving him three points and a plus-3 rating for the day. Canada is in action again on Friday, Dec. 28 when they take on Slovakia.

Just 1:54 into the contest, Pokka assisted on Artturi Lehkonen’s goal, putting the Finns ahead 1-0. Finland led 3-1 after the first period, and 5-1 after the second period before playing a scoreless third.
Finland’s next game will be Friday, Dec. 28, when they play the Czech Republic.
