Grabner Records Hat Trick in Olympic Debut

Michael Grabner started his Olympic career with a bang, recording a hat-trick in Austria’s 8-4 loss to Finland Thursday morning.

Grabner, who won the fastest skater at the 2010-11 NHL SuperSkills competition, opened the scoring on his first shift, 36 seconds into the game. The Austrians held 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the first period, but the Finns stormed back for five unanswered goals. Grabner scored twice in the third period to complete the hat trick.

"It's always nice and fun to score goals, but at the same time you want to win games," Grabner said. "Unfortunately, today we gave them too many chances and they capitalized on most of them."

Fellow Islander Thomas Vanek picked up an assist in the loss.

Team Austria plays Team Canada Friday at noon Eastern Time.
