John Tavares and Team Canada skated to a 3-1 win over Team Norway Thursday afternoon.

The Islanders captain was on the ice for linemate Jamie Benn’s game-winning goal, but was held off the scoresheet. Tavares also saw time on Canada’s first power-play unit with Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz.

Shea Weber opened the scoring with a slap shot 6:20 into the second period. Weber’s blast was followed up by Benn’s winner nine minutes later.

Norway cut the deficit to one 22 seconds into the third period, but Canada restored the two-goal lead 1:25 later, as Drew Doughty skated in off the blue line and buried a slick backhander high on Lars Haugen. Carey Price stopped 18-of-19 shots, while Haugen turned aside 32.

Tavares and Team Canada take on Michael Grabner, Thomas Vanek and Team Austria Friday at noon Eastern Time.
