John Tavares and Team Canada defeated Michael Grabner, Thomas Vanek and Team Austria 6-0 Friday afternoon.

Los Angeles Kings’ forward Jeff Carter led the way for Canada tallying a natural hat-trick in the second period en route to the rout of Austria. Combined with a 3-1 victory over Norway on Thursday, Canada is now 2-0-0-0 in preliminary round play.

Tavares was kept off the scoresheet despite seeing time on Canada’s top power-play unit. Although playing primarily at even strength with the Boston Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron and Dallas Stars’ Jamie Benn, Tavares saw some time on Canada’s top line with Pittsburgh Penguins Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz. Tavares’ four shots tied for third on Canada.

One day after notching a hat-trick against Finland, Grabner couldn’t find the same magic against the Canadians. Both Grabner and teammate Vanek pressured Canadian goaltender Roberto Luongo, but were unable to find the back of the net. One day after falling to Finland 8-4, Austria is now 0-2-0-0 in the preliminary round.

Late in the first period, Grabner had one of Austria’s best chances of the game, but his shot rang off the post as “The Eagles” went into the locker trailing by two goals. Vanek finished the game second on Austria with four shots on goal.

Canada will wrap up the preliminary round against Finland, Sunday at noon eastern time, while Austria concludes its preliminary round at 3 A.M. on Sunday.
