"We didn't have a full game," Grabner said. "We had times where we played pretty good and time where they just controlled the game. Obviously, when you score no goals, it is pretty tough to win a game."
Los Angeles Kings all-star Anze Kopitar scored the eventual winner 5:29 into the first period, as the Austrian team never found their offensive groove. J Urbas, S Kovacevic and J Mursak also scored for Slovenia, who advance to the quarterfinals in their first year qualifying for the Olympic men’s hockey tournament. Slovenia will play top-seeded Team Sweden tomorrow at 3 a.m. ET.
The loss ends the first, but very successful, Olympic appearance for Grabner, who scored five goals – including a hat trick against Team Finland – in four games. The Islanders winger also picked up two goals against Team Norway.
Vanek, who captained the Austrian team, finished the tournament with one assist in four games.
