USA 5, Germany 4

Matt Donovan’s power-play goal and a four-point effort from Johnny Gaudreau helped propel Team USA to a 5-4 win over Team Germany Tuesday at the IIHF World Championships in Minsk, Belarus.

Donovan’s goal – a backdoor tap-in on a feed from Gaudreau – was his second of the tournament after the Islanders defenseman tallied against Kazakhstan on Friday. Gaudreau was a dominant force against Germany on the ice, scoring one goal and adding three assists.

The win puts a wrap on preliminary play for Team USA, who advance to the quarterfinals with a 4-1-0-2 (four wins, one overtime win, two regulation losses) record. Team USA currently sits in second place in Group B, but could drop to third place if Belarus beats Russia in regulation later today.

Quarterfinals action begins on Thursday.
