New York Islanders - Training Camp 2011

After suffering a groin injury in the first week of Islanders training camp (Sept. 21), 38-year-old forward Brian Rolston has been sidelined. He started skating on his own last Thursday and then finally began skating with the team Sunday.

“Really, this was my first day practicing,” Rolston said after practice at Iceworks on Monday. “I did practice yesterday, but it was a full practice today. I felt good. It’s a lot of fun to be back out there. It’s never fun to be sitting out.”

The Islanders acquired Rolston during free agency and training camp has been his first opportunity to learn the system and work with his new teammates and coaches. Even with the setback, the 15-year NHL veteran is confident he’ll be ready for Opening Night.

“You definitely need training camp to get prepared, so I’m going to have a short week here to get prepared,” Rolston said of his return. “I plan on working hard every day to get where I need to be to for Saturday.”

He added, “We’re going to go through some things that I just need to get a little sharper on, but other than that, I felt good physically. That’s the first step.”

As for seeing time on the power play, Rolston has been working the point for years and is confident he’ll be able to step right in.

“I think we’ll work on (the power play) this week,” Rolston said. “I’m pretty familiar with what I’m going to be doing out there. I’ve been going through a lot of things, but I’ve been playing the point on the power play for a long time. So it should come pretty easy to me.”
