Islanders forwards Brock Nelson and Colin McDonald both scored, as Team USA defeated Belarus 6-1 Friday in Minsk, Belarus. Jacob Trouba led the way with two goals, while Johnny Gaudreau and Jake Gardiner also scored for the United States in the team's opening game of the 2014 World Championshps.

Nelson connected for the game's first goal at 12:22 of the opening period. Working on the power play, Tyler Johnson bounced a centering feed off of Craig Smith's skate and onto Nelson's stick for a quick snap past Belarus goalie Andrei Mezin.

Late in the second period, Trouba and Gaudreau scored 56 seconds apart to make it 3-0 USA. Trouba hammered home a one-timer from the point at 14:49 and Gaudreau ripped a wrist shot through a defenseman and under the cross bar at 15:55.

McDonald made it 4-0 at 17:42 of the second period, sweeping home a cross-ice feed from Jimmy Hayes. It was McDonald's first career international tournament game and goal. In the final seconds of the middle period, Belarus cut into the USA lead, as Andrei Stepanov came through on the power play at .

A frustrated Belarus team got into penalty trouble late in the game and Trouba and Jake Gardiner made them pay, adding late power-play goals in the closing minutes of the third period.

Team USA is back in action Saturday against Switzerland at 1:45 p.m.
