Strome and Theoret keep up the pace

Center Ryan Strome continued his torrid scoring pace for the Niagara IceDogs (Ontario Hockey League) by scoring six points in three games last week, while his linemate and fellow Islanders prospect Mitchell Theoret found the score sheet in each game as well. On Nov. 14, Strome scored a goal and an assist while Theoret lit the lamp, as the IceDogs skated to a 5-2 triumph at Erie. Strome recorded two assists in games on Nov. 17 at Ottawa and Nov. 18 at Kingston, while Theoret earned a helper in each game. Both players have scored in every November game and are riding eight-game point streaks (Strome: Six goals, 16 assists, 22 points; Theoret: Five goals, 10 assists, 15 points). Strome leads the OHL with 28 assists and 43 points this season, and Theoret’s point-per-game pace has already led him to a new career-high in points (23) this season.

Mayfield helps Denver top rival

Defenseman Scott Mayfield led the University of Denver (Western Collegiate Hockey Association) to back-to-back wins against in-state rival Colorado College. The St. Louis, MO native scored his first goal of the season on the road against the Tigers on Nov. 16, as the Pioneers skated to a 6-5 victory. The following night at home, Mayfield earned a power play assist as Denver cruised to a 6-2 win. The Islanders second round (34th overall) pick in the 2011 NHL Draft has one goal and four assists in 10 games this season.

Russo’s big weekend leads to sweep of Michigan

Defenseman Robbie Russo posted three points (two goals, one assist) in two games last week for Notre Dame (Central Collegiate Hockey Association), helping the Fighting Irish to their first two-game road sweep in 34 years. The Westmount, IL native assisted on the game-winning tally late in the third period of a 3-1 decision on Nov. 15, and lit the lamp twice the following night in a 4-1 victory. Russo has seven points (four goals, three assists) in 11 games this season.
