Islanders General Manager Garth Snow and Head Coach Jack Capuano were on hand at Village Club of Sands Point Monday for the 5th Annual Golf Classic to benefit Smile Train, an organization providing cleft lip and palate surgeries to children around the world.

The day’s events included breakfast, a golf tournament in the afternoon, cocktail hour, dinner buffet, award ceremony and raffles. All money raised at the tournament was donated to Smile Train.

“It’s a great cause, to be able to help kids who are less fortunate, and really to change the course of their lives,” Snow said. “It’s obviously something that we get a good feeling being a part of. We like to give back any time we can.”

“Smile Train gives children an opportunity in life that they probably couldn’t getotherwise,” Capuano said. “It’s real important, not only that we do what we can for their organization, but that we understand we’re fortunate and that we always want to give back.”

Smile Train provided more than 125,000 free cleft surgeries this year in 87 countries around the world. To date, Smile Train has corrected more than 900,000 smiles since 1999.

Smile Train’s Mission:

A bright, healthy smile is something pretty wondrous. It brings us pleasure and love. Yet every three minutes, in developing countries around the world, a child is born with a cleft that denies him or her this essential experience. There are more than one million children who struggle to eat and speak; too poverty-stricken to have their clefts repaired. Most cannot attend school or hold a job and suffer a life of shame and humiliation.

Fortunately, Smile Train provides more than 340 free cleft repair surgeries a day to poor children everywhere — giving them back the precious gift of a smile and with it, another chance at life.
