The New York Islanders have released their schedule for the 2013-14 regular season. The team will play its home opener at Nassau Coliseum, Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. against their new divisional rival, the Columbus Blue Jackets.
With the debut of the National Hockey League’s newly formatted divisions this season, the 82-game schedule will see the Islanders face the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers five times each, with meetings against both during the month of October. The team will open the season on the road against the Devils on Friday, Oct. 4 at Prudential Center. John Tavares and the Islanders will host the cross-town-rival Rangers at Nassau Coliseum on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
The intensity of the first-round playoff matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins will return to Uniondale on Tuesday, Dec. 3 and Thursday, Jan. 23. The Islanders play their divisional opponents, the Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals, two times each at Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders will play at least one home and one road game against every team in the National Hockey League this year. The NHL will go on hiatus in mid-February for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, with the Islanders off from Feb. 9-26.
The Islanders are slated to host several games surrounding national holidays this season, starting with the day-before Thanksgiving matchup against the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday, Nov. 27. On Black Friday, Nov. 29, the Detroit Red Wings will make their first trip to Nassau Coliseum as members of the Eastern Conference. The Islanders will play games throughout the winter holiday season, including Saturday, Dec. 28 against New Jersey and Thursday, Jan. 2 versus the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks. On Monday, Jan. 20, the Islanders will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a home matchup against Philadelphia.
The Ottawa Senators visit Long Island for the Islanders’ final home game of the regular season on Tuesday, Apr. 8.
