SABRES (0-6-1) at ISLANDERS (2-2-1)
TV: MSG-B, BELL TV, MSG PLUS
Season series: First of three meetings this season between the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders. They will not see each other again until March 15 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Big story: Seven games, seven goals, zero wins. The Sabres, who will play their second game in as many nights, will look to put an end to a seven-game skid to start their 2013-14 season. The Islanders are returning home after suffering 3-2 regulation losses in Chicago and Nashville over the weekend.
Sabres: The woes continued for Buffalo on Monday night. Brian Flynn erased a 1-0 deficit for the Sabres at 15:04 of the second period, but former Buffalo captain Jason Pominville scored in the final minute of the second. It proved to be the deciding goal as the Sabres suffered a 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild at First Niagara Center.
“There are some bright spots. We finally outshot a team 23-20 and held them to 20 shots, which is outstanding," Sabres forward Steve Ott said. "We come out on the losing end. Lack of production from all of us, including myself. At the end of the day, losing’s just not the option.”
Islanders: They didn’t play poorly, but the Islanders failed to come away with any points over the weekend, which makes this four-game homestand even more important. A victory against the struggling Sabres could certainly help them get back on track, but New York coach Jack Capuano knows they have to earn it.
"We just got away from doing some of the little things, the intangibles that make us successful," Capuano told Newsday on Monday. "Singular focus -- do your job every shift and our work ethic will dictate our results."
Who's hot: Sabres center Cody Hodgson has five points (one goal, four assists) in seven games. … Islanders wing Michael Grabner leads the club with seven points (two goals, five assists) through five games. John Tavares has three goals and three assists.
Injury report: Nikita Zadorov (hand) is questionable for Buffalo. Ville Leino (rib) and Henrik Tallinder (upper body) are out.
