The 2008 draft pool is considered the deepest in years and the Islanders are set to select higher in this year's Entry Draft than they have in the past seven. With the Islanders selecting fifth in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft on Friday, June 20 in Ottawa, many highly-touted prospects will be available for the Isles to choose from. Each week leading up to the draft, Newyorkislanders.com will feature a new player who is likely to go early in this year's draft.

Tyler Myers

Team: Kelowna Rockets (WHL)
Position: Defenseman
Born: February 1, 1990 in Houston, Texas (Age 18)
Height: 6-7
Weight: 204
Shoots: Right
CSS Final Ranking: 4th among North American skaters

2007-08 Regular Season: Games Played (65), Goals (6), Assists (13), Points (19), PIM (97)

2008 Playoffs: Games Played (7), Goals (1), Assists (2), Points (3), PIM (12)

Update: The towering backliner, known more for his defensive prowess, set career-highs in goal (6) and points (19) in his third season with Kelowna. In his second WHL playoffs, Myers posted a line of 1-2-3 in seven games. The Alberta-native participated in the 2008 CHL Prospects game and was selected to represent Canada at the Under-18 World Championship in April of this year.

Strengths: "His height differentiates him from the rest of the draft-eligible defensemen - he towers above all the other players. He is not often burned by the small, quick players and because of the emphasis in today's NHL on a lack of restraining type of play, I think Tyler has adjusted well to that and is more ready to play in the new NHL than a lot of the other smaller players."

What They're Saying:

"It goes without saying the 6-foot-7 Myers owned the vertical jump at the combine, but it was his all-round effort that showed he belongs in the top 10 this year."

-    Ryan Kennedy / The Hockey News

"For a younger guy, he's got a lot of composure with the puck. I think that's one of the reasons why a lot of NHL scouts are fairly high on him right now."

-    Ryan Huska / Kelowna Rockets Head Coach

"There may be a night when the large feet of Myers get in his way a little bit, but to hear scouts talk, they won't get in his way for very many more years."

-    E.J. McGuire / NHL Director of Central Scouting
