The New York Islanders were busy this past weekend at the NHL Entry Draft. When it was all said and done, the Islanders drafted five of the International Scouting Services' top 30 prospects.
The Islanders put themselves in position to make those additions to the organization with five draft selections in the first 53 slots and eight selections in the first 73.
One of the biggest steals in the draft could be Russian LW Kirill Petrov. According to ISS, who ranked him as the second best European in the 2008 draft, Petrov possesses quality stick-handling skills and skating abilities and has the skill set to develop into a consistent power forward at the NHL level.
Here's a list of where ISS ranked the Islanders draft selections:
|26||Trivino, Corey||C||1/12/1990||L||6.01||170||Stouffville OP||JHL|
ISS on Josh Bailey: "Used in all situations, Bailey has an excellent work ethic and can play in both ends of the ice. He is a very good playmaker and can feed his teammates the puck and take face-offs very well. Often used as a quarterback on the power play, Bailey's hockey sense and leadership skills are excellent. He possesses solid playmaking and skating skills. Bailey will be a welcome addition to a club looking for a solid, dependable forward with an ability to make his teammates better."
ISS on Kirill Petrov: "Petrov is a talented young prospect who has size, speed and skill. Standing at 6'3 and almost 200 pounds, the young forward is hard to knock off the puck and can deliver an impressive physical presence, if properly motivated. He is a very strong skater with impressive quickness. Petrov is also a capable puck handler and when combining all three elements of size, speed and skill, he is capable of making the most with very little room. Beyond his soft touch, Petrov also sees the ice well, but does need to further step up his game to make quick and reliable decisions."
NHL CSS on Corey Trivino: "Corey has the ability to see the ice well and to move the puck. He needs to get stronger – he's willing to battle, but isn't always winning the puck. He's got a good goal-scoring touch and he's good on faceoffs with good skating ability, not necessarily high-end skating, but good. Is considered an all-around pure athlete as he was offered to play professional rugby in Europe."
NHL CSS on David Towes: "David has a good shot with a quick release. He also moves the puck and sees the ice very well. A good skater and uses his speed to create scoring chances for himself and his linemates. Possesses excellent hands has a very good sense for the game."
ISS on Aaron Ness: "Ness is an intelligent, instinctive offensive defenseman who has quick hands, tremendous speed and great on-ice vision. He is a fierce competitor who has the ability to make those around him better. His skating combines quick feet with smooth strides, great acceleration and can get up to speed very quickly. Ness also possesses the ability to make plays at high speeds – a quality that isn't commonly seen in high school defensemen. Ness utilizes his speed and quickness quite well on both sides of the puck."
