HUNTER, YORK RE-SIGNED TO ONE-YEAR DEALS
Forwards and Islanders avoid arbitration hearing

The Islanders have re-signed forwards Trent Hunter and Michael York to one-year contracts. As a result, the players and team will not be going to arbitration.

The 25-year old Hunter was a finalist for the Calder Trophy in 2004-04. He tied Mariusz Czerkawski for the team lead in goals with 25 and Oleg Kvasha for the team lead in points with 51. Hunter was the only rookie in the NHL to lead his team in goals and points. He also finished with a +23 rating, appeared in the NHL Young Stars Game during All-Star Weekend and was named to the NHL's All-Rookie Team.

The Red Deer, Alberta native first made his impact with the Islanders in the 2002 playoff series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Appearing in the last four games of the seven-game series, Hunter scored a goal and an assist to make his mark on the franchise's first playoff series in seven seasons.

Hunter was originally drafted by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the sixth round, 150th overall, of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. In May of 2000 the Islanders acquired Hunter from Anaheim for a fourth-round draft selection.

York was acquired by the Islanders (along with a conditional draft choice) last week from Edmonton in exchange for Michael Peca. York was 16-26-42 in 64 games with Edmonton in 2003-04, and 22-29-51 in 71 games with the Oilers in 2002-03.

A  native  of  Waterford,  Mich., York represented the silver medal-winning Team  USA in the 2002 Olympics. Prior to turning pro, York spent four years at Michigan State. At 5-11, 185 pounds, York will be entering his sixth NHL season in 2005-06.

The  27-year  old  York  broke  into  the  NHL with the Rangers in 1999-00, playing  in  all  82  games and posting 26 goals and 50 points. In 374 career NHL games with the Rangers and Oilers, York is 98-137-235.
