BATES RE-SIGNS WITH ONE-YEAR DEAL

The Islanders have re-signed forward Shawn Bates to a one-year contract. The 2005-06 season will be Bates' eighth in the NHL and fourth with the Islanders.

Bates joined the Islanders in 2001-02 and had a career-high playing in 71 games going 17-35-52 with a +18 rating. In the 2002 playoffs, Bates will long be remembered for converting the game-winning penalty shot in Game Four versus Toronto.

A native of Melrose, Mass., Bates was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fourth round of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. He attended college at Boston University and was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team in 1993-94 and the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team in 1994-95.

The 30-year old Bates went 9-23-32 in 69 games during the 2003-04 season. In 348 career NHL games with the Boston and Islanders, Bates is 53-101-154.
