50 WORDS OR LESS: The Leading Goal Scorer in 05-06
Here's what the fans in Islanders Country had to say

Alexei Yashin, Miroslav Satan, Trent Hunter and Jason Blake were the leading vote-getters when we asked Islanders fans: who will lead the Islanders in goals in 2005-06?

Mark Parrish, Michael York, Oleg Kvasha and Mattias Weinhandl also received plenty of nods. Our favorite came from the grandfather of one of the Islanders players. (Yes, he voted for his grandson).

Our ten winners will receive Islanders caps at their homes in the next four weeks. Thank you to everyone who posted.

WINNERS

Trent Hunter will maximize his special blend of size and speed to put up 35 goals and lead the Isles.  We've been treated to flashes of Trent's potential -- now he's going to steer his big body and soft hands in front of the goal and embarrass goaltenders on a regular basis.

Four words will suffice here: Leading scorer on Modo! (That'd be Mattias Weinhandl, for all those who didn't learn Swedish to follow the Elitserien during the lockout.)

Alexei Yashin. If he isn't the Islanders leading goal scorer, then the Isles dramatic re-tooling will have been in vain. The success of this team will be able to be measured by Alexei's production. Asher SmithGreat Neck, NY

Easily has to be Jason Blake.  With the zero tolerance policy being enforced on holding and interference, Blakie's speed and agility is the perfect combination in the "new" NHL.  He will become untouchable on the ice, and impossible for goaltenders to deny.

Craig Edelman
Merrick, NY

Thanks to a more talented supporting cast, Alexei Yashin will lead the team in goals. In previous years opposing defenses would drape 2 or 3 players on Yashin, but now with Satan and York keeping defenders busy, a rejuvenated Yashin will be free to score 45-50 goals.

It will be nice to see Ranger fans cry when Mike York puts on an  Islander uniform and leads the team to the playoffs as the  Islanders leading goal scorer.  York will be the Isles MVP and best pickup since Peca joined the team and took us out of mediocrity.

Miroslav Satan will have a hell of a year. Most goalies in the league will be praying for heavenly intervention when SATAN is bearing down on them. Not even the Devils will be safe from the wrath of SATAN!!!!! Yes, Jesus Saves..but SATAN will knock in the rebound.

"Islanders goal, scored by # 81, Miroslaaaaaaav Shhhhaaataaannnn!!!!!" is what we'll be hearing from the P.A. announcer very often at the Coliseum this season!  We haven't had a legitimate sniper since the days of Zigmund Palffy and Mike Bossy.  I'm expecting many water bottles to be flying off the nets courtesy of Miroslav Satan this season!

Although the names Satan, York, and even Yashin are tempting, I'm going with Oleg Kvasha as the Islander who will lead the  team in goals. Hopefully with the new rule changes, 2005-2006 will be the breakout year all Islander fans have been waiting for from this  multi-talented, sometimes uninterested, always entertaining veteran  Islander forward.

Nicholas Tedesco
Holbrook, NY

This year's leading goal scorer will be Mark Parrish. Without a doubt the team's toughest forward, Parrish will take punishment in the crease every game, deflecting shots past helpless goalies, and ripping rebounds top-shelf. Reduced goalie pad sizes will only increase his goal total.

HONORABLE MENTION

Power play. Yashin: edge of the circle. Sopel and Niinima: firing shots from the point. Parrish: bull in front of net. Kevin Weekes: in goal. He makes the stop. It trickles to the sideboard to Miroslav Satan. Top shelf where mama keeps the peanut butter.

Several players have the ability to lead the Islanders in goals: Yashin, Parrish, Satan, Hunter, Blake, York. However, I believe Sean Bergenheim will surprise a lot of people with his desire and net 36 on a team that boasts three 30-goal scorers and leads the NHL in goals.

Travis Flynn
Milford, CT

Alexei Yashin will finally find his niche with the Islanders... which is why he will NOT be the top goal scorer. Miroslav Satan will go to the right place at the right time, so Yash will have his target, and Miro will have the goals.

Mike Levak
Brooklyn, NY

I'm going to have to say Trent Hunter. Although the Islanders have added Satan, York and other great offensive players, Trent has already proven to us that his future can and will be just as bright as anyone on the Islanders.

Brett Burnbaum
New York, NY

This year, I think Shawn Bates will be the leading scorer.  He has speed, finesse, and excellent puck control.  When the new rules come into effect this year, (no red line and the clutching and grabbing hopefully will stop) he should be able to score lots of goals.

Garth Fischer
Nobleford, Alberta

Mattias Weinhandl will have a breakout season for the Isles.  With some solid NHL experience behind him, a stellar performance in the Swedish elite league last season, and the potential to play on a top line, I say he will triple the #11 on his sweater and score 33 goals.

Gregory Giblin
South Huntington, NY

Many think Yashin or Satan will be the leading scorer because they complement each other well. However, Coach Stirling loves to mix and match so I don't see them being together all season. Michael York will be this season's leading scorer because of his "overpowering" speed in the new rule system.
