FROM THE GM'S DESK, by Mike Milbury
Bags are being packed amidst tons of new equipment. Equipment managers are working non-stop. The office staff is in a frenzy coordinating visas and travel arrangements for 50 or so players. Coliseum workers are busy painting and polishing hallways and locker rooms. All of that is being done in anticipation of -- at long last -- a hockey season. Hockey's back and it's about time.
Enough about a new CBA. Please go away, union/management talk. Who cares about deadlines and legal threats? Give us a damn hockey game: Passionate players skating ferociously into opponents. Big glove saves by athletic goaltenders. A blocked shot, a goal with 2 seconds to go in regulation for the win. YES!!
We're back as of this weekend with the start of rookie camp at Islanders Iceworks and then off to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia for a full week of training camp before we return for our first preseason game against the Rangers at the Coliseum on Sept. 20.
As usual, all 30 teams are pretty sure this is the year. And for one amongst us, it will be true. For now, we're all allowed to dream, to anticipate that Stanley Cup parade. I missed it. I missed the stress. I missed the big wins and the tough losses. And yes, I missed the players.
We're back in business and may we never have to go through a work stoppage again. We have made lots of changes in our office and playing personnel. We hope all of them will prove successful.
Come back and see us do our stuff. Check out Petteri, Robert and the rest of our top prospects at our open practice sessions at Islanders Iceworks this weekend. See if you can make the time for our game at the Coliseum on Sept. 20.
We'd love to see you. We missed you most of all. Without the fans of Long Island, we can't make it happen. You've waited long enough. We will do anything we can to entertain you. Questions? Give me a call. See you soon.
