TARKKI AND DiPIETRO BACKSTOP TEAM A TO 3-0 WIN
YARMOUTH, Nova Scotia - Vince Macri, Trent Hunter and Sean Bergenheim each scored a goal and rookie Tuomas Tarkki and Rick DiPietro combined for the 18-save shutout in Team As impressive 3-0 win over Team C on Day 3 of Islanders Training Camp at the Mariners Centre.
Today's scrimmage was the most physical of the three thus far as there were several hard hits and also featured the first fight of camp as Kevin Colley and Luciano Aquino dropped the gloves after a collision between the two near the side-boards.
Team A took a 1-0 lead with nice passing on a 3-on-2 break. Jaroslav Mrazek came skating down the left and gave the puck to Kevin Colley, who slid the puck over to Vince Macri. Macri jumped into the play and fired a slap shot low to the glove side, beating goaltender Garth Snow.
A turnover led to the second goal for the A squad as Jason Blake picked up a loose puck just inside the blue line and gave it to Trent Hunter, who skated to the bottom of the circle and snapped a wrist shot past Snow for the 2-0 lead.
A few minutes later, Team A increased its lead to 3-0 on a goal by Bergenheim. Hunter set up the goal with a nice pass to Shawn Bates at the top of the point, and he gave the puck to Sean Bergenheim, who took care of the rest. Bergenheim, who has three goals already in training camp scrimmages, skated in on Snow and beat him with a shot to the top corner for the commanding 3-0 lead.
Team C had a number of scoring chances early on, but Tarkki was impressive throughout. He made a nice glove save on Alexei Yashin's shot from the slot and made a couple of nice pad saves on shots by Petteri Nokelainen, who continues to have a strong camp. Tarkki, who recorded nine saves in the start, did catch a break as a goal was waved off due to goaltender interference.
DiPietro had his share of big saves, including robbing Petteri Nokelainen, left all alone in the slot. Nokelainen took a feed from Alexei Yashin in front and snapped a back-hander that DiPietro gloved out of mid-air to preserve the shutout. He finished with eight saves after replacing Tarkki midway through the scrimmage.
