Goal Scorers: Pitton, Martinek, Papineau, Bouchard, Rourke, Satan and Zhitnik

Partially in thanks to Garth Snow's heroic performance in the first period, the Blue Team held off Rick DiPietro's White Team in today's Intrasquad Game in Yarmouth, 4-3, before another standing room only crowd at the Mariners Centre.

It was a game filled with power plays, as a total of 22 penalties were called.

"That's why it's called the exhibition season," said Islanders head coach Steve Stirling, back today after missing yesterday's practice with the flu. "The refs did a solid job of preparing us for what lies ahead.

"The game had a decent pace, although it wasn't like Friday night. That's kind of understandable after a long week of practices and workouts. We'll focus more on off-ice tomorrow and be ready for the Rangers at the Coliseum on Tuesday."
The Blue team came out firing in the first period, but veteran goaltender Garth Snow was up to the task as he stopped all 13 shots faced in the first period.

The Blue team's top line of Jason Blake-Alexei Yashin-Miroslav Satan had several great scoring chances, but Snow stopped them all.  The best scoring chance for Blue was midway through the period when Blake intercepted an ill- advised cross-ice pass by rookie defenseman Chris Campoli and skated in all alone on Snow, who made a pad save on the shot. Satan followed in and got the rebound, but his shot went wide of the net.

The Blue Team continued their dominance in the second period and finally broke through on the scoreboard as Jason Pitton and Radek Martinek scored early in the period to give Blue a 2-0 lead.  Pitton took a nice pass from Masi Marjamaki on 2-on-1 break and snapped a wrist shot past Wade Dubielewicz 3:54 into the period.  The Blue team finally converted on one of their many power play opportunities as Martinek scored with 18 seconds left on Sean Bergenheim's hooking penalty.  Dubielewicz made a nice blocker save on Sopel's shot from the slot, but the rebound came right to Martinek at the bottom of the circle and he knocked it in for the goal.

The White Team finally got on the scoreboard as Justin Papineau scored a power play goal with 52 seconds left in Robert Nilsson's holding penalty.  A few minutes later, the White team went back on the power play looking to tie the game, but the Blue team answered with a shorthanded goal as Joel Bouchard took a pass from Jason Blake and fired a shot high past Dubielewicz at 10:30.  Blake drove hard to the net, but gave the puck back to Bouchard, who was trailing on the play and he drove hard to the nice and snapped a wrist shot in the slot for the goal.

The White team made it interesting as they answered back with a shorthanded goal of their own as Allan Rourke and later Satan beat Chris Madden to make it 4-2.  Alexei Zhitnik's late goal made it 4-3, but Madden and his teammates shut the door in the final minute.

There is one practice session tomorrow, followed by an off-ice workout before the Islanders depart Yarmouth tomorrow on a 2:00 pm flight. A sneak peak at the Islanders' lineup for Tuesday confirmed Mike Milbury's promise to showcase all the new veterans and most of the top draft picks for the fans at the Coliseum.

Puck drop is 7:05 pm.
