POST-GAME REPORT: Boston 6, Islanders 2

By Kerry Gwydir

Penalties and inconsistent play riddled the Islander's effort Saturday night as they fell to the Boston Bruins, 6-2. Steve Stirling's squad dropped to 2-2 on their exhibition calendar and face the New Jersey Devils Sunday night at 8pm at the Continental Airlines Arena.

The Bruins opened the scoring just 2:31 into the game when Ian Moran flicked a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle and beat Wade Dubielewicz between the arm and chest protector. The Bruin's lead lasted to the midway point of the same period after Petteri Nokelainen drew a cross-checking penalty on Boston's Jiri Slegr.

That's when Robert Nilsson jammed home the rebound of Chris Campoli's point shot that was initially rejected by goaltender Hannu Toivonen's left pad. The Bruins' netminder originally robbed Justin Papineau moments earlier off a pretty passing sequence initiated by Alexei Yashin and Nilsson. Miroslav Satan, who played the point on this powerplay sequence, notched the secondary assist.

Special teams continued to be the story of the first 20 minutes of the game, and the Isles wound up on the short end of things when they were down two men for 1:24 with Ryan O'Marra and Joel Bouchard in the sin bin. While the Isles tried to survive that situation, Oleg Kvasha buried Brian Leetch with a cross-check in front of the Islander's cage with 24 seconds left on the two-man advantage.

The Bruins, who spent nearly all of the powerplay in the Isle's end, finally converted when Glen Murray ripped a one-timer over Dubielewicz's right shoulder with 6:11 to go and 24 seconds left on Bouchard's infraction.

Former Bridgeport Sound Tiger Ben Guite put the Bruins up 3-1 when Ryan Caldwell lost the puck in the neutral zone while skating up the ice. Colton Orr fed the puck up to Guite, who had a near breakaway and buried his shot past a sprawling Dubielewicz.

After Janne Niinimaa argued a penalty late in the first and was tagged an additional two minutes, Boston tallied another man-up goal when Eric Healey smacked home a centering feed from Ben Walter after a 2-on-1 developed in front of the Islander cage.

Murray notched his second of the game when he sprinted behind Bouchard to pot a backhander under Dubielewicz with 8:01 left in the second. Walter made a pretty feed between the Islanders' defense to allow Murray behind the defensive coverage.

Caldwell redeemed himself with 2:47 to go in the middle stanza when he ripped a slapper past Toivonen. A faceoff win in the offensive zone by Papineau earned the forward the lone assist on the goal.

After the Isles failed to convert a 5-on-3 in the opening moments of the third period, Boston's Walter extended his team's lead by snapping a top-shelf bullet under the crossbar. A giveaway deep in the Islander zone by O'Marra led to Thornton finding the Bruins' winger alone in front.
