New York Islanders
Several challengers at forward and D to go against the Devils

by Chris Botta
There will be no Satan against the Devils, but the Islanders' lineup for Sunday's pre-season game in New Jersey includes some of the team's top prospects and many of the depth players still battling for a role on this year's team.
20003 second round pick Jeremy Colliton will be in for a challenging test, as will 2005 second-rounder Dustin Kohn on defense. The impressive Kohn is likely to be paired with Islanders top-four dman Brent Sopel, while Allan Rourke -- still pushing for a spot on the blue line -- will be paired with veteran Brad Lukowich. The third pairing will be Tomi Pettinen with Radek Martinek.
Of the 12 Islanders forwards playing at the Meadowlands, only four are complete locks to be in the opening night lineup on Oct. 5 -- Jason Blake, Mike York, Trent Hunter and Mattias Weinhandl. Steve Stirling can expect extra effort from the balance of forwards looking to make an impression.
"It's the third game in three nights for us," said Stirling. "You know the Devils, being at home, will probably have a strong lineup. This is an excellent opportunity for so many of our guys to show us what they can do. It's also a good chance for our fans who can make the trip to the Meadowlands to see some of our future, like Kohn and Colliton."
Notes: With Wade Dubielewicz playing Saturday in New Hampshire, it's a fair bet that Garth Snow will get the start Sunday. Whether the veteran will play the entire game or split the tilt with Dubie remains to be seen...
For Islander fans attending the game, please note that puck-drop is scheduled for 8:00 pm sharp since there is no TV or radio broadcast scheduled...
If you're wondering about the late Sunday night start time, it's because the Jets have a 1:00 kickoff with Jacksonville and it takes hours to clear the Meadowlands parking lot after an NFL game, as many of you probably know...
Kudos to the Islanders' FSNY broadcast team for "BACK ON ICE," the Islanders season preview show that debuted tonight. Excellent work all around. The show will be re-broadcast on FSNY at 5:00 pm today...
With 50 players still in training camp, expect a round of cuts on Sunday or Monday so the Islanders can get down to much smaller numbers in time for Tuesday night's game in Philadelphia and Thursday's game at Madison Square Garden.
