SATAN HAT TRICK FREEZES PENS
By Kerry Gwydir
Miro Satan tallied the hat trick, but it took a shootout for the Isles to gain a 5-4 shootout win at the Igloo in Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon. A splendid effort in overtime by Rick DiPietro allowed the Isles an opportunity to take the game in the shootout.
Satan put the Isles on the board just 2:31 into the game with Pittsburgh's Ric Jackman in the box. It was the sniper's 21st of the season as Trent Hunter battled in front of Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury and Brent Sopel put the puck on net from the point.
The energetic Islander start came to an end seven minutes later as the visitors provided the hosts with the first of three 5-on-3 powerplay advantages. And the Penguins converted immediately when Sidney Crosby easily tapped-in Mark Recchi's back-door pass behind Rick DiPietro. It was the first of four powerplay goals on 11 opportunities for the hosts.
Another powerplay came the Isles way soon after in the operner, and it set up Satan's second of the game as Pittsburgh's Ryan Whitney was sent to the box for holding Alexei Yashin. A pretty feed from behind the net by Mike York set up Satan's one-timer inside the hashmarks with seven minutes to go in the first.
Satan notched the hat trick with 10:28 to go in the second off a wrister from the top of the slot. A pretty play by Joel Bouchard to keep the play alive at the Pittsburgh blueline allowed the play to commence as Satan was allowed plenty of space to place a shot inside the left post. It was Satan's 7th career hat trick and first with the Islanders.
Penalty issues continued to fester in the Islanders' effort as they gave the Penguins a third 5-on-3 late in the second period. And it burned Brad Shaw's squad when Tomas Surovy banged home his 8th of the season off a rebound off a Jackman shot with Yashin and Tomi Pettinen in the box.
A slow change on another New York penalty allowed the Penguins to tie the game six minutes into the third with Brad Lukowich in the box. On the play, Recchi beat Sopel and Pettinen to a loose puck for his 19th of the year after DiPietro made a quality stop off a blast from Sergei Gonchar.
Chris Campoli gave the Isles the lead once more with six minutes left in regulation. The rookie defenseman notched his seventh of the year off assists from Jason Blake and Yashin. But the lead was short-lived as Jackman brought the hosts even at the 16:29 mark on another man-up goal. This time, the Pittsburgh blueliner ripped a shot from the left point past a screened DiPietro at send the game into the extra frame.
Most of the overtime session was played in the Islanders' zone, and it was DiPietro who starred in those five minutes. The Islanders' keeper made a trio of outstanding stops to deny Pittsburgh of taking the extra point in overtime. Two in-tight stops off Crosby and another on Jackman allowed this game to go into the shootout.
In the shootout, both Isles' shooters -- Satan and Trent Hunter -- were successful. For the Penguins, Recchi and Michel Ouellet were both rejected by DiPietro.
