MEMORIES OF 1980: Bryan Trottier
No. 19 says 'Everyone on that team played an important role'

By Chris Botta

Islanders Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier called today to tell us that he has been able to change a previously scheduled personal appearance in Canada in order to attend the Celebration of the Islanders 1980 Stanley Cup team on March 4.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime event," said Bryan. "From what I hear, everyone is going to make it and I didn't want to miss out. I think it's wonderful that Mr. Wang and the Islanders are making such an effort to gather all the guys from the team. It's an opportunity for us to share so many incredible memories."

Trottier will arrive on Long Island on March 3 in time for the private celebration with his teammates and their spouses and take part in all the festivities on March 4. Over the phone, Bryan shared his personal memories of that 1980 Stanley Cup team.

"What I hope everyone will remember about us is that every single player on that team played an important role," said Trottier. "Look at the four playoff series that year. We had to play LA, with that incredible offensive line with Dionne. We had to play such great team defense and find a way to out-score them. Against Buffalo, which had such great team speed, we needed to skate with them. The Boston series was all about physical play and sticking up for each other. Then we get to the Final, and people forget this but we had to play the team that dominated the NHL that year. We needed our all-around game to get by them. And having the best money goaltender of all time in Smitty didn't hurt, either.

"Everyone had something to do with that first Stanley Cup. I think what sums that team up is that Bobby Nystrom scored The Goal. I have been on a bunch of championships teams and Ny's goal was the best goal of my life! And I had nothing to do with it! To me, that goal by Bobby said it all about us. It was scored by a man who represented the best of the Islanders, and it couldn't have happened to a better person."

The 1980 Stanley Cup celebration on March 4, presented by Modell's and Newsday, will begin at 7:00 pm, followed by the regular season matchup between the 2005-06 Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers. In addition to the 1980 team, the Stanley Cup will also be in attendance at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Islanders full season subscribers will receive an added treat. Season subscribers are invited to the Islanders' morning skate on March 4, followed by an introduction of the 1980 team, sneak preview of that night's ceremony, plus a meet-and-greet with the legends.

Tickets are still available for the March 4 game between the Islanders and Flyers, preceded by the celebration of the 1980 Stanley Cup team. Tickets are available at the Coliseum box office, TicketMaster or by contacting the Islanders at 1.800.882.ISLES.
