ISLANDERS ACQUIRE TWO TOP PROSPECTS FROM LA
Former first-rounders Denis Grebeshkov & Jeff Tambellini come to Long Island; Mark Parrish & Brent Sopel dealt to the Kings

The Islanders have acquired top prospects D Denis Grebeshkov and LW Jeff Tambellini plus a conditional third round pick in the 2006 draft in exchange for forward Mark Parrish and defensemen Brent Sopel.

The 22-year old Grebeshkov, the Kings' first round pick in 2002, and the 21-year old Tambellini, LA's first pick in 2003, will join the Islanders in time for the team's practice on Thursday at Nassau Coliseum. Both highly-regarded young players were cited among the game's Top 50 Prospects in the recent Future Watch edition of The Hockey News.

"This is a trade made undoubtedly with an eye on the future of our organization, but we're also very comfortable putting Denis and Jeff right into our lineup and still making a run at the playoffs this season," said Islanders general manager Mike Milbury. "Grebeshkov is an extremely talented two-way defenseman who will have a long career on the blueline for us. Tambellini is a fantastic skater and an exciting player with a lot of skill.

"Mark Parrish was a class act and a very good player for us for five seasons," continued Milbury. "We wish Mark and Brent the best and thank them for their time with the Islanders."

The 6-1, 195-pound Grebeshkov was the Kings' first round pick (18th overall) in the 2002 NHL Draft. He joins the Islanders from LA's American Hockey League affiliate in Manchester, where the left-shooting defenseman is 2-25-27 in 48 games. Grebeshkov has two assists in eight games played for Los Angeles this season.

The 5-11, 190-pound Tambellini was the Kings' first round pick (27th overall) in the 2003 NHL Draft. He was Manchester's leading scorer this season with 25-31-56 in 56 games. Tambellini, who also played four games for Los Angeles this season, is the son of Steve Tambellini, a member of the Islanders' 1980 Stanley Cup championship team and the assistant general manager of the Vancouver Canucks.

"This is a dream come true for me," said Tambellini. "I've always followed the Islanders because of my dad's link to their tradition. I'm so excited about the opportunity to be an Islander. Denis and I will be at practice on Long Island in the morning and we can't wait to get there."

Parrish, an Islander for five seasons, has appeared in 57 games this season and has recorded 24 goals and 17 assists for 41 points. Parrish, 29, finishes his 345-game career as an Islander with 214 points (118 goals, 96 assists), making him the 28th all-time scorer in franchise history.

Sopel, 29, was in his first season with the Islanders. He has appeared in 57 games this season recording two goals and 25 assists for 27 points.
