FRANZ NIELSEN NETS GOAL VS. CANADA
NYI prospect stars in 5-3 loss to Canada at WC

Islanders prospect Franz Nielsen scored for Denmark in his national team's 5-3 loss to Team Canada today at the World Championships.

Nielsen, a highly-regarded prospect selected by the Islanders in the third round of the 2002 NHL Draft, is bidding to become the first Dane to make it to the NHL. The Islanders are currently in discussions with Nielsen on a contract and he could arrive in North America in time for the 2006-07 NHL season.

To give you an understanding of what an achievement it would be for Nielsen to make it to the NHL -- and how impressive today's showing by the Danes was -- it has been reported that there are more people registered to play hockey in the city of Toronto than there are in all of Denmark.

In today's preliminary game at the Worlds, Sidney Crosby scored two goals for Team Canada. Linemate Brad Boyes had a goal and an assist while Patrice Bergeron, the third player on Canada's top unit, added three assists. Mike Comrie and Mike Richards also scored for Canada.
Frans Nielsen, Jens Nielsen and Kim Staal replied for Denmark, which held Canada to a 2-2 tie at the 2003 world championship and gave Canada fits again today.

The Islanders' prospect narrowed Canada's lead to 3-1 of the second period with a shorthanded goal at 7:43 when he skated into Canada's zone and beat Marc Denis with a shot that went in off Jason Williams' stick.
