50 WORDS OR LESS: With the First Pick...
Over a dozen names were discussed as potential Islanders first round selections at this year's NHL Entry Draft, with a bulk of the picks going to Derick Brassard, Phil Kessel, Jordan Staal and Jonathan Toews.
Erik Johnson. Ranked #1D man. We need him. Big guy to make big things happen.
I would select Phil Kessel. He is a hard nosed North American style player, which is exactly the type of guy the Islanders need. He played college hockey at perennial power U of Minnesota and has a heavy right handed shot.
Unless Jordan Staal or Jonathan Toews are on the board, I would like to see the best pure offensive talent come to the Isles with the #7 pick. That would be Phil Kessel. If anyone can make a complete player out of him it would be Trots.
All things being equal, Derick Brassard will be pulling on an Islanders' jersey on June 24. If the Islanders trade up, they'll be doing so to select Nicklas Backstrom. If they trade down, it will be Kyle Okposo.

Derick Brassard. We need some finishers. We have guys that can pass the puck, but we need someone up front that really scares the other teams.
The Islanders should continue to focus on selecting skilled, gritty players with leadership capabilities. Fortunately, Bryan Little should be available and he combines all three. Though small in stature, he has the potential to be a game-breaker and thrive in the new NHL as a top point-getter.
I think the biggest hole on the team is defense. What they need is a stay at home defenseman who can clear the front of the net. But more importantly has hockey smarts and makes good decisions under pressure.
I say the Isles will get Nigel Williams. Big and strong with some speed; he's a keeper.
Would love to get high-end offensive player ie. Kessel, Toews, or Staal. Still, best pick may be Nigel Williams the "Pronger-like" big U.S. defenseman.
The Islanders should aim for someone with first-line potential to make the teammates around him better and, just as importantly, a person who is a leader. I choose Nicklas Backstrom, Derick Brassard, or Peter Mueller in this spot. This franchise does not need floaters who do not try every night.

I'd like to see the Islanders select Derick Brassard. Reading his bio in The Hockey News' Draft Preview, he reminds me of a former Islanders great Mike Bossy. The bio reads elite scoring ability, but not very physical and loses the 1-on-1 battles. However, Brassard should excel in today's NHL.
The Islanders should pick Toews. He is a hard worker and has the size to be a frontline centre. The Islanders should use their extra selections in the 3rd round to move up to get Toews. The other player I like is Staal.
I agree with what Mr. Arbour always said, you build a team from the goalie out. We have the goalies and some good young forwards. So imagine Erik Johnson on the blue line with Campoli, Gervais, Erskine, Martinek, we would have a solid six with Caldwell maturing.

Center, Jordan Staal.
The Islanders' greatest needs are offense and leadership. I would like to see them draft a two way player with leadership qualities, someone known for hustle and determination. Peter Mueller fits the description best.
