ISLANDERS PICK JOENSUU
The Islanders have selected winger Jesse Joensuu in the second round of the draft, 60th overall, in Vancouver.
Joensuu tallied 4 goals, 8 assists and 12 points in 51 games during the 2005-2006 season with Assat of the Finnish Elite League.
"We were very happy Jesse was still available in the second round," said Islanders Finnish scout Vellu Kautonen. "Jesse is a very good two-way player. He is mature for his age after playing for a number of years in the Finnish Elite League."
Joensuu is strong along the boards and is good at winning the battles in the corners. He'll have no trouble adapting to the NHL's physical style of play and will be a welcome addition up front for the Islanders.
His size doesn't take away from his skills, as he is an excellent passer and playmaker.
"Joensuu is a great addition because of his size, but also because of his skills," said Kautonen.
Look for Joensuu to develop, in the future, into an effective power-forward for the Islanders.
Stay tuned for more as the draft continues in Vancouver.
