JULY 10 - 15: NYI DEVELOPMENT CAMP
Islanders Iceworks, Open to the Public

Part I: The Forwards

By Jason Lockhart

Islanders  Iceworks  is  the  place  to be next week to check out the future of the New York Islanders. The organization is hosting a Development Camp from Monday, July 10 through Saturday, July 15 featuring virtually all of their most notable prospects.

Although  he's  been  working  round the clock during the free agency period, new general manager Neil Smith will be in attendance to monitor the workouts.  Consider  Monday  the first official day on the job for new head coach  Ted  Nolan,  who  will  be  at  Islanders Iceworks to meet the young players.  Monday  will  also mark the triumphant return to the ice of Bryan Trottier,  the  Islanders  Hall  of  Famer  who  is now in charge of player development.

And  what  a  collection  of young talent there will be. Participants include recent Islanders first round picks Kyle Okposo (2006), Ryan O'Marra (2005),  Petteri  Nokelainen  (2004)  and  Robert Nilsson (2003) plus young Islanders  Chris  Campoli,  Jeff  Tambellini,  Jeremy  Colliton  and  Bruno Gervais.

The  Islanders'  prospects, divided into two groups, will participate in  a  combination of on-ice skating and off-ice conditioning sessions each morning from approximately 9:00 to 11:30. Following the workouts, they will take  part  in  seminars on nutrition and conditioning and learn more about Long  Island  and the Islanders organization. At different times, Trottier, Pat  LaFontaine and grass roots hockey director Steve Webb will address the team.

At  night  the  prospects  will get to know each other as they attend Yankee games, concerts and other major New York and Long Island events.

The  morning  sessions  at Islanders Iceworks are open to the public. Today's  camp  primer  features  thumbnail  sketches  on the young forwards participating in the NYI Development Camp. On Saturday, newyorkislanders.com will focus on the defensemen and goaltenders.
