GREY BEATS BLUE IN SCRIMMAGE
Nilsson Nets Shootout Winner

By Jason Lockhart

After a deadlocked scrimmage with the score tied at 6-6, Robert Nilsson lifted Team Grey to a 7-6 shootout victory with his clinching shootout goal. The resilient Team Grey came back from deficits of 0-3 and 4-6 for the win.

The 36 players were split into two teams and participated in two 25-minute halves at Islanders Iceworks in Syosset on Thursday morning. The first period was played 4-on-4 and the final period 5-on-5. Penalties were called, but no man-advantages were awarded. Instead, penalty shots were taken following each half in place of power plays.

For Team Blue, Kyle Okposo notched the game's first goal and Jeff Tambellini notched a hat trick. But it wasn't enough. Okposo was still a dominant force for his team, creating lots of chances for Team Blue, which outplayed its counterpart for much of the first half.

"I felt good out there," said Okposo who played down scoring a goal. "It was nice to score, but it's only a scrimmage."

Jeff Tambellini and 2006 third-round pick Robin Figren put Team Blue up 3-0, but it wasn't enough to hold off Team Grey.

Team Grey battled back and got on the board just half-way through the first half with defenseman Bruno Gervais feeding three-year Notre Dame standout Wes O'Neill, who deflected the puck past recent draft selection Jase Weslosky. Weslosky yielded only two goals, while playing half the game in the losing effort.

Gervais got Team Grey within one by putting a nifty backhand through the legs of a sprawling Michael Chiasson, a camp invitee. Then later midway through the second half, Shane Sims put the puck in his own net to give Team Grey the 6-6 tie they were looking for. Luch Aquino was credited with the goal for Grey at the eight-minute mark.

The game remained tied for the rest of regulation before Nilsson sent his team into the locker room on the high note.
