POSTCARDS FROM YARMOUTH - Day Seven
Thursday, September 21, 2006

(Yarmouth, Nova Scotia) Random notes, quotes and observations from Day Seven of training camp:

The players traveling to Moncton and Halifax had a morning skate with Ted Nolan, who made his first appearance on the Mariners Centre ice. Those remaining in Yarmouth practiced later, preparing for tonight's game versus St. Francis Xavier University.

After the morning practice Ted Nolan spoke about the young players making the trip.

"The young guys we brought up to the exhibition games (like Frans Nielsen, Masi Marjamaki and Blake Comeau) showed us that they wanted to fight for jobs and weren't just expecting jobs. These three young kids earned a spot. Add (Jeff) Tambellini to that as well. We want an environment where people are earning their jobs, especially young people. The quicker we get the message out to those guys the better off the organization will be."

Nolan also discussed the line combinations set for the first game against the Bruins in Moncton.

"We're not going to go with the lineup that will start the season this weekend. We'll try some mixing and matching and see who works with who. We'll put some of the guys who really battled for jobs with veterans to see how they react. We'll see how it all unfolds in the next two weeks."

Danish-born Frans Nielsen and Finnish-born Masi Marjamaki were roommates all week in Yarmouth. Both Nielsen and Marjamaki played on Team Nystrom during the Lobster Cup, at times on the same line for both Blue-White games and now will be placed on the same line together for the first exhibition game. Now they'll be together for at least a couple more days up in Moncton as they both vie for spots on the Islanders roster.

Marjamaki has just over five minutes of NHL experience, appearing in the final Islanders game of the 2005-06 season. He played the rest of the season with Bridgeport.

Meanwhile, Nielsen, who was drafted in 2002 has been playing in the Swedish Elite League for the past five years and is looking to become the first Danish player to compete in the NHL.

They both spoke highly of each other.

"Nielsen is a good puckhandler and he can skate really well, so I'm just going to be on the wing and support him," said Marjamaki. "We're going to try and be a speedy line out there and forecheck hard and try to shoot the puck.

"Masi (Marjamaki) works hard out there," noted Nielsen. "He's a good player. Hopefully, it turns out to be a good thing."
