SUMMER STORIES: SHAWN BATES
A Boston in mind, but a Long Islander at heart

Shawn Bates is a Bostonian through and through. There's no mistaking his Boston accent and he won't hide that he's a fan of all Boston teams, (minus the Bruins of course) despite now residing on Long Island.

He lists his favorite Red Sox as Manny Ramirez and Big Papi (David Ortiz), who is once again in the running for AL MVP. Does Bates think he can win it? "With the 50 homers and leading in RBIs," said Bates, "the big question is since he's not an everyday player as far as everyone else is concerned, so I don't think he'll win it, but he deserves it."

While Bates spent most of his summer at his home in Medford, Massachusetts, he also ventured a couple of times down to Myrtle Beach, Florida.

"I enjoyed golfing down in Myrtle Beach at my brand new home down there. I had some fun going down there for the first time. It was an interesting summer this year, but I stayed close to home this summer."

This summer Bates had a chance to catch up on some movies and lists "You, Me and Dupree" as his favorite hot-weather flick.

As an American, Bates rooted for Team USA at this year's World Cup, but after their loss, didn't pick another team to root for, but continued to enjoy the soccer. When asked if he thought Pluto should still be considered a planet, his response: "Sure, why not."

Bates, like his fellow hockey players had an "intense" training regimen over the summer. He and 12-15 other NHLers including Hal Gill, Ryan Whitney and Brendan Shanahan would work out four days a week for three hours a day.

"We have a 12-16 week regimen that is pretty intense," said Bates. "I don't get on the ice until the second week of August. Some go on earlier, but I like to let my body rest."

For all you traveling to Boston, Bates recommends exploring Faneuil Hall, known for its shops and its one-of-a-kind food court.

He may have a Boston accent and root for the Boston teams, but Bates has truly become a member of the Islanders family and is a Long Islander at heart.
