THE ROAD TO SUCCESS
Islanders open season in Phoenix

By Jason Lockhart

(10:00 p.m. ET, TV: FSNY | Radio: Bloomberg 1130) Islanders hockey is back and the season kicks off tonight as they face the Phoenix Coyotes on the road at 10 pm.

The Islanders finished the preseason on a three-game winning streak, finishing with a record of 3-2-0. Goaltenders Rick DiPietro and newly signed Mike Dunham split time in net for each of the team's five games.

Alexei Yashin led the Islanders in scoring in the preseason, posting two goals and four assists. New acquisition, Tom Poti, paced the defense with one goal and four assists.

The Islanders begin the season with 23 players named to the roster, including nine new faces: goaltender Dunham, defensemen Sean Hill, Poti and Brendan Witt, forwards Andy Hilbert, Viktor Kozlov, Richard Park, Mike Sillinger and Chris Simon.

"The old guys have really embraced the new guys," said Ted Nolan. "And the new guys have embraced the old guys. The people that we've brought in are good character people and the people left here from the past are good people, so it's a good group right now."

The Islanders will start on the road for the seventh consecutive year and match their record for longest opening road trip with four games.

In the 33 years of Islanders existence, the team has started on a four-game road trip only six times (˜82-˜83, '88-'89, '89-'90, '92-'93, '93-'94, '01-'02). In those six seasons, the Islanders reached the playoffs five of the six times, with one of the seasons ending in a Stanley Cup Championship (1982-83). During those opening road trips the Islanders went a combined 12-10-2.

When the Islanders start on at least a three-game road swing, they've made the playoffs in ten of those 13 seasons, going 22-17-6 on those trips.

The Coyotes finished 3-4-0 in this preseason earning back-to-back wins in their final two games versus Edmonton and Anaheim. Their leading preseason scorer was rookie center Joel Perrault who notched a goal and four assists. Newly acquired Ed Jovanovski led the defense in scoring, picking up four points.

The Islanders hold a 28-20-12 lead in the all-time series against the Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise, last meeting at Phoenix on February 13, 2004, a 5-3 Islanders win.
