DUCK HUNTING
ISLANDERS 5, DUCKS 4 (F/SO)

Official Scoresheet | Official Super Stats

By Jason Lockhart

It was an extended Wednesday evening, but it was worth it as the Islanders topped the Anaheim Ducks in the sixth round of a shootout at the Honda Center by the score of 5-4. Mike York tallied the game-winning shootout goal and Ted Nolan earned his first win as head coach of the Islanders.

Samuel Pahlsson got his first goal of the season by slipping one through Mike Dunham's legs with 7:40 left in the first period for a 1-0 Ducks lead. Rob and Scott Niedermayer recorded the assists.

In the second period the Islanders' offense came alive. Three goals in the span of 1:46 gave the Islanders a 3-1 lead.

Hard work paid off for the Mike York-Chris Simon-Arron Asham line. Simon cycled the puck down low to Asham who found York in front. York made no mistake and one-timed it past Giguere for his first goal of the season at 3:42 of the second period, and a 1-1 score.

Less than a minute later at 4:25 of the second period, Trent Hunter also got his first of the season. Brendan Witt's wrist shot from the point was deflected by Hunter for a 2-1 Islanders lead.

Anaheim head coach Randy Carlyle called timeout following the Islanders' second goal, but it didn't stop the momentum. The power play gave the Islanders their first two-goal lead of the season, 5:28 into the second period. Viktor Kozlov pulled up at the half boards and slipped the puck over to Simon who one-timed it past Giguere for a 3-1 Islanders lead.

Pahlsson got the Ducks back within one on his second goal of the game as he converted on a 2-on-1 pass from Travis Moen to make it 3-2 Islanders at 9:52 of the second period.

The Islanders lost the lead on Chris Pronger's first as a Duck, on the power play as he ripped one past Dunham from the slot at 7:49 of the third period to even the score at three.

The Ducks grabbed the lead again on the power play. Corey Perry picked up his second goal of the season on a loose puck in front and jammed it home for a 4-3 Ducks lead with 6:03 left in the third period.

The captain, Alexei Yashin, got the game tied again with just 3:43 remaining in the third period with his second goal of the season. Miroslav Satan made a nifty kick pass over to Simon who gained the blue line and dropped it off to Yashin who shot the puck through Giguere with Simon screening for a 4-4 game.

There was no scoring in the overtime session, so it came down to a shootout.

Ryan Shannon and Viktor Kozlov traded goals to extend the shootout to sudden death. It was in the sixth round that Dunham stopped Rob Niedermayer before York sealed the victory with a five-hole shot through Giguere.
