SNOW AND NOLAN GREET FANS
By Jason Lockhart
The Islanders were back at the Coliseum Saturday morning, preparing for their home opener against Boston, and so were the NYI 365 season subscribers.
As part of the benefit of being a season subscriber, fans were invited to attend the Saturday morning skate. The fans watched as the players took to the ice and practiced before Game One of 41 at the Coliseum. The atmosphere in the building was one of controlled excitement as everyone knew the game was just hours away.
"This is what we've been waiting for all summer," said Dee Karl of Sayville. "It's the first day, so it's very exciting. We have a whole day planned around the game, so coming to the practice was a good way to start it off."
Garth Snow mingled among the fans to get a sense of their thoughts on the team and the upcoming season. Ted Nolan also joined the crowd, stopping first along the boards to answer questions by the fans, who were happy to get a chance to meet the coach up close and in person.
"This is great," said Joey Parella from Franklin Square. "Getting to talk to Ted; it doesn't get any better than that. The players look like they're skating hard and we look forward to watching to game tonight and the rest of the season. "
Added Joey's buddy Rob Salem. "You're talking to the coach of the Islanders. He's a casual talker and a great guy."
The players definitely noticed the crowd on hand. One fan got Chris Simon, who was waiting in line for a drill, to turn around and pose quickly for a picture before continuing with the practice.
Tonight's game begins at 7 pm and will be televised on FSNY 2 and broadcast on Bloomberg 1130 radio.
