ISLANDERS 3, PHILADELPHIA 1
Alexei Yashin scored two goals and Rick DiPietro allowed only one goal on 33 shots as the Islanders topped the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1 Thursday night at the Wachovia Center.
Yashin got the Islanders on the board first with his sixth goal of the season at 9:10 of the first period. Chris Simon centered it to Blake, who shot the puck towards Yashin at the side of the net. Yashin corralled the puck before pushing it past a sliding Antero Niittymaki.
Shawn Bates took a pass from Arron Asham and busted down the right wing before passing it across to Richard Park for a one-timer. The goal was Park's second of the season and gave the Islanders a 2-0 lead with 5:35 left in the period.
Asham and Mike Richards squared off in the Islanders' second fight of the season with 2:09 left in the first period. Asham got in an early lick and capped off the fight with a few more haymakers before it was broken up by the linesmen.
DiPietro kept the Flyers off the board mid-way through the second with a superb save on Eric Meloche, who deflected R.J. Umberger's centering pass.
With 4:09 left in the second period, Yashin got his second goal of the game. Blake skated into the offensive zone and dropped the puck off to Yashin, who fired a wrist shot over the blocker of Niittymaki for a 3-0 Islanders lead.
At the end of the second period, things got nasty when Andy Hilbert and Sami Kapanen starting jarring at each other before all ten skaters on the ice got involved. Brendan Witt and Ben Eager ended up squaring off with both players landing punches during the fight.
Simon Gagne broke the shutout with 2:14 remaining in the third period on the power play with a deflection on Richards' pass.
Ted Nolan: "We mixed the lines up tonight to get better results and it worked. Simon played exceptionally well with Yashin, while Park got a big goal for us playing with Bates and Asham. Overall, all the lines played well tonight."
Alexei Yashin: "Blakey made two great passes on my goals. Hopefully, we can continue to play well together the rest of the season."
Rick DiPietro: "Despite struggling lately, the Flyers have a strong offense. They were putting a lot of pressure on us, but our defensemen did a great job of clearing the front of the net and limiting their time in the zone."
