ISLANDERS & SPORTS WRAP! TO FIGHT HUNGER
The New York Islanders have joined the anti-poverty program Sports Wrap! to aide Long Island's battle with hunger. The Sports Wrap! program is part of the larger national anti-poverty organization Rock and Wrap It Up! based on Long Island, which donates food that is prepared but not sold to trained volunteers who bring it to shelters throughout Long Island. Aramark, the official food partner of the Nassau Coliseum, is also a vital partner in this endeavor. The Islanders are the first NHL team to participate in this program.
"Sometimes we tend to forget how big a problem hunger on Long Island really is. But programs like Sports Wrap! work to fix that and that's why we're excited to begin working with them," said Islanders Senior Vice President Mike Milbury. "With Aramark and Sports Wrap!, we hope to ease the problem locally and to build awareness of this issue with the help of our NHL colleagues throughout North America."
The national Sports Wrap! program, have partnered with 14 franchises in the NHL, NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA and AFL to feed over 15,000-20,000 who hunger each week nation-wide with sports-generated food.
Following Islanders games at the Nassau Coliseum, Aramark and Rock and Wrap It Up! volunteers will collect prepared but un-used food for donation.
Rock and Wrap It Up!'s mission is to end poverty by feeding those who hunger with recovered edible leftover food. The success of the program makes available financial resources to treat the root causes of poverty. Since the programs inception in 1990, over 20,000,000 pounds of food have been picked up, which has feed over 30,000,000 people.
The program accomplishes its goals of feeding the hungry through food recovery using trained volunteers. The objective is to develop strategies and tactics to increase hunger awareness and food recovery.
