The Islanders (8-6-3) came up just short, dropping a 3-2 heartbreaker in a shootout against Tampa Bay Friday night at the St. Pete Times Forum. The Islanders fell behind 2-0 early in the first period, but fought back to tie the game in the second period on goals by Radek Martinek and Mike York. Rick DiPietro stopped 36 shots in regulation and overtime as the Islanders have now earned points in five consecutive road games.

Nikita Alexeev scored his seventh of the season at 2:32 of the first period to put Tampa Bay up 1-0. Vincent Lecavalier skated in 2-on-1 and fed Alexeev for a perfect pass and an easy tap-in.

The Lightning capitalized on a power play to go up 2-0. Brad Richards fired a high wrist shot at 5:08 of the first period for his sixth goal of the season.

Martinek scored his first goal of the season on a slap shot past the glove of Johan Holmqvist to cut the lead to 2-1 at 8:00 of the period.

Richards had a glorious chance to make it 3-1 with just over three minutes remaining in the second period. He broke in all alone, but DiPietro stopped Richards' forehand to keep it 2-1.

Viktor Kozlov dished off a pass to York, who blasted a rocket over Holmqvist to make it 2-2 with only 39 seconds remaining in the second period. It was York's fifth goal of the season.

The teams were held scoreless in the third period and overtime.

In the shootout, seven Islanders shooters could not put one past Holmqvist. Dmitry Afanasenkov's wrist shot in the seventh-round of the shootout squeaked through the pads of DiPietro for a 3-2 Tampa Bay victory.
