DiPietro, Snow and Nolan help collect food for the hungry

It's only fitting that at the start of the Holiday Season the Islanders return home from one of their longest road trips of the year and get right back to helping the community.

Following Tuesday afternoon's practice at Islanders Iceworks, Rick DiPietro, Garth Snow and, surprise guest, Ted Nolan visited the Red Lobster in Carle Place to help Island Harvest collect food for the hungry on Long Island.

Island Harvest is an organization dedicated to rescuing food from restaurants, caterers, country clubs and other food establishments. They then send the food to over 400 agencies across Long Island and in turn these agencies distribute the food to hungry people across Long Island.

"The Islanders contacted us and told us that they wanted to get involved with Island Harvest," said President and CEO of Island Harvest, Randi Shubin Dresner. "It's great to have the Islanders here. When you get people like Rick DiPietro, Garth Snow and Ted Nolan to support your organization, it gives the organization more credibility to the work that you're doing. It allows the public to get involved, who might not have been introduced to Island Harvest."

DiPietro and Snow were initially billed to come and sign autographs for everyone who brought food to donate to the cause, but when Nolan discovered the Islanders would be participating in the food drive, he felt honored to help out with the event.

"Anytime you can help out people less fortunate it's a great opportunity for us to do it," said Nolan. "It's one of things as athletes we have the great privilege of doing. We just want to make sure we're here to support this foundation and encourage others to give as well."

The cold didn't dampen anyone's spirits, as the line quickly grew. While signing autographs and taking pictures with fans, DiPietro noted he could no longer see the back of the line.

"It's a great cause and a great turnout,Â? said DiPietro. The good thing about being with the Islanders is that I get a chance to jump in headfirst into organization like Island Harvest. Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays, and it's great to be helping those in need, especially during the holidays."

The event created quite a buzz with TV 55 and News 12 on hand to capture the event that was being broadcast live on KJOY 98.3.
