Chris Simon got into his second fight of the season, taking on Ronald Petrovicky with 5:28 remaining in the second period. The Islanders took a 3-2 lead going into the third period.
With less than 10:00 left in the third period, Bruno Gervais saved a goal by sliding across and keeping the puck out of the net as it trickled across the goal line. Only a few seconds after dodging the bullet, Kozlov scored his second goal of the season to make it 4-2. Kozlov blistered a shot over Fleury's glove with 9:13 left on the clock.
Mark Recchi cut the lead to 4-3 with 4:52 remaining in the third period. Sidney Crosby found a streaking Ryan Whitney, who slid it across to Recchi for the tap-in goal.
