GAME PREVIEW
Islanders (13-9-3) at Rangers (13-9-4)

(5:00 p.m. ET, TV: FSN NY | Radio: Bloomberg 1130) In their first of eight matchups on the season, the Islanders and Rangers will battle for more than just bragging rights, tonight at Madison Square Garden. The winner will take home sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division. The Rangers currently have 30 points and are tied with the New Jersey Devils for first in the division. The Islanders are just one point behind with 29.

The Islanders got to the 29-point mark with one of their best offensive performances of the season. With their captain out of the lineup, the Islanders, behind two goals each from Mike Sillinger and Viktor Kozlov, topped the Pittsburgh Penguins on the road by the score of 5-3. Miroslav Satan tallied his 300th career NHL goal in the game while Rick DiPietro was superb in net, stopping 34 shots to earn his tenth win of the season. Sillinger was once again outstanding on draws, winning 72% of his faceoffs. Sillinger leads the league in faceoff percentage, converting 61% of the time.

Despite losing their last three games in overtime or via the shootout, the Rangers have picked up points in six consecutive games. In their most recent contest, they fell to the Buffalo Sabres for the second time in a week. On Friday, the Rangers lost in a shootout after holding a 3-2 lead in the third period. Daniel Briere was the lone goal scorer in the shootout as the Sabres won all four meetings this year against the Blueshirts.

The Rangers boast four players with at least 29 points: Brendan Shanahan (29), Martin Straka (31), Michael Nylander (34) and Jaromir Jagr (39). Shanahan was acquired as a free agent in the off-season and has lived up to his billing so far, leading the team in goals with 17.

Countering DiPietro in the nets once again has been the sophomore standout, Henrik Lundqvist. His numbers this season are down from his first year, but he has still seen a majority of the time in goal, with spot starts from Kevin Weekes.

Another sophomore, Petr Prucha has had a disappointing second year. After scoring 30 goals in his rookie season, the Czech Republic native has only five goals in his first 26 games.

Besides Shanahan, the Rangers acquired two-way forward Matt Cullen and physical defenseman Aaron Ward in the off-season via free agency.

Chris King and Steve Mears have the call on Bloomberg Radio 1130, while Howie Rose and Billy Jaffe can be seen tonight on FSN NY.
