The Crosby-Malone-Recchi line too much to handle in Pens win

Official Scoresheet | Official Super Stats

By Jason Lockhart

Ryan Malone scored his first NHL hat trick and Sidney Crosby and Mark Recchi each chipped in with four points as the Pittsburgh Penguins skated past the Islanders 7-4 Friday night at the Mellon Arena. Jocelyn Thibault earned his first win of the season, stopping 28 of 32 shots.

Malone scored his first of the game off a high wrist shot, 7:22 into the first period with Crosby and Recchi setting up the goal.

The Islanders tied it up on a 4-on-3 power play with 7:36 remaining in the first period. Sean Hill sent a pass down low to Mike York, who fired it across the crease. Miroslav Satan picked up the loose puck and deposited into an empty net for his ninth goal of the season.

The Penguins scored the next four goals.

Just 11 seconds after Satan's goal, Crosby put the Penguins back up by one when his shot from the slot deflected off of Radek Martinek's skate.

Off the ensuing face-off Chris Simon and Chris Thorburn faced-off with the fists, but it was all Simon, who simply pummeled Thorburn with some thunderous blows.

Recchi's screened shot from the point on the power put the Penguins up 3-1 after one period.

The Penguins went up 6-1 on goals by Jordan Staal, Maxime Talbot, shorthanded, and Malone, his second of the game.

The Islanders scored the next three goals to draw within two goals on tallies by Tom Poti, Jason Blake and Mike York, but it wasn't enough.

Malone scored his first career hat trick on a superb individual effort from Crosby with 4:26 left in the game to stop the late Islanders surge.
