GAME PREVIEW
Islanders (17-12-3) at Carolina (17-14-4)

(7:00 p.m. ET, TV: FSN NY | Radio: Bloomberg 1130) The Islanders look for their third consecutive win as they travel to Carolina to take on Eric Staal, Rod Brind'Amour and the Hurricanes.

The Islanders won their second game in a row by topping their East River-rivals, the Rangers, on Tuesday night. The offensive star of the game was Jason Blake, who recorded his fourth career NHL hat trick to help lead the Islanders to a 4-3 win. It was the second time in two games this year the Islanders visited Madison Square Garden and came home with a victory behind a hat trick.

On Tuesday, the Rangers took a 1-0 lead early in the first period, but only 43 seconds later, Blake tied the game at one. He would go on to notch his natural hat trick by scoring twice on the power play. Rick DiPietro buckled down to hold off a late surge by the Rangers and ended up with 30 saves for his 14th win of the season, and the third consecutive at the Garden, dating back to last season.

"I'm happy with how we're playing right now," said Ted Nolan. "We had a big game against Atlanta that started the whole thing. Then we beat the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Things are going well."

The Islanders will try to extend their winning ways as they take on the defending Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes. In their first two meetings of the season, the Islanders have come away with four points, winning two games at the Nassau Coliseum by scores of 4-3 and 4-2.

In their latest meeting, on November 22, the Islanders won with four different players contributing goals: Shawn Bates, Blake, Alexei Yashin and Miroslav Satan. Blake and Yashin each recorded a goal and an assists, while DiPietro earned the victory. Defensively, it was one of the Islanders' better games. Carolina only mustered 15 shots in 60 minutes.

The Islanders have recently acquired two new players from the Philadelphia Flyers, defenseman Freddy Meyer and forward Randy Robitaille. Meyer is not expected to play tonight because he is day-to-day with a sore back. Robitaille is expected to play, and will skate on a line with Satan and Viktor Kozlov.

"I got a chance to just play Carolina in my last game with the Flyers," said Robitaille. "They're a team that's got a lot of confidence after winning the Stanley Cup, and are well-coached. We have to go out, play hard and try to get a win."

Carolina has had an up-and-down season, starting off slowly and then surging in early November. The Canes recently loss five games in a row, but have now won their last two games, defeating Tampa Bay last Saturday and Philadelphia on Tuesday by the score of 2-1. Cam Ward stopped 29 of 30 shots with Anton Babchuk and Justin Williams scoring the Carolina goals.

The Islanders are currently tied for seventh in the Eastern Conference standings and only three points behind the Rangers for first place in the division, with four games in hand. A win tonight by the Islanders and a loss by New Jersey to the Washington Capitals would put the Islanders in a fifth place tie with the Devils in the Eastern Conference.

Chris King and Steve Mears have the call on Bloomberg Radio 1130, while Howie Rose and Billy Jaffe can be seen tonight on FSN NY.
