CAROLINA 5, ISLANDERS 1

The Carolina Hurricanes converted on four of their nine power play opportunities and cruised to a 5-1 win over the Islanders Friday night at the RBC Center. Cam Ward stopped 23 of 24 shots to earn his 16th win of the season.
The Canes took a 2-0 lead after one period of play on Rod Brind'Amour and Justin Williams' power play goals. Brind'Amour scored while playing 5-on-3.
Carolina scored two more goals in the second period, including a power play tally by Eric Belanger made it 4-0 after 40 minutes.
In the third, Scott Walker and Chris Simon exchanged goals, as Ward lost his shutout bid with 8:09 gone by in the third period.
Brendan Witt tried to energize the Islanders by fighting Walker and Mike Commodore on separate occasions.
The Islanders get right back on the ice Saturday to face the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Nassau Coliseum before taking two days off for the holidays.
