GAME PREVIEW
Islanders (19-18-3) at Carolina (21-18-4)

(7:00 p.m. ET, TV: FSN NY | Radio: Bloomberg 1130) Tonight at the RBC Center, the Islanders try for their third win of the season against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes.

The Islanders took care of business against the Hurricanes at the Nassau Coliseum on October 21 and November 22, but fell in their most recent meeting, in Carolina. Since their last game on December 22, the Islanders have gone 2-5-0, while the Hurricanes have not faired much better going 3-4 in that span.

One thing you can expect tonight is a physical game. Six players in tonight's game are in the top 15 in the hits department, three of which are Islanders. Trent Hunter (5th) has 124, Brendan Witt (6th), 122 and Sean Hill (7th) has accumulated 120. Erik Cole's Carolina is in 2nd place, Mike Commodore, 10th and Craig Adams is in 14th.

Two of the top faceoff men will also go head-to-head tonight. Sillinger is second in the league in faceoff percentage, converting at a rate of 59.1%. Rod Brind'Amour is right behind him in third, with a rate 58.9%.

Jason Blake continues to be a spark plug during this tough stretch for the Islanders, tallying points in three straight games. In their most recent loss to New Jersey on Thursday, the Andy Hilbert-Mike Sillinger-Trent Hunter line had a strong game, combining for six points. Each player had a goal and an assist in the 4-3 loss. Sillinger is third on the team in points with 27.

Frans Nielsen is set to be the first Danish players to skate in an NHL game after being recalled from the Islanders' AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Nielsen is an Islanders 2002 third-round draft pick, who joined the Sound Tigers this year after spending five seasons in the Swedish Elite League. The 22-year-old has 23 points in 33 games for the Sound Tigers.

Unlike their 2005-06 edition, the Hurricanes of 2006-07 are having an up-and-down season. They're currently in one of their valleys, having lost the last two games via the shutout. Carolina lost to Pittsburgh on Tuesday, 3-0 and to Phoenix, 2-0, on Thursday.

Carolina's offense has been hurt by the lack of production from center, Eric Staal. After eclipsing the 100-point mark in his second season, last year, Staal has only 34 points in 43 games. Justin Williams, 25, is currently leading the team in goals, while 36-year-old is pacing the team in points.

Cam Ward has been nothing special in goal after winning the Conn Smythe award as the 2006 Playoff MVP. His save percentage is a dismal .899%.

Chris King and Steve Mears have the call on Bloomberg Radio 1130, while Howie Rose and Billy Jaffe can be seen tonight on FSN NY.
