GAME PREVIEW
Islanders (21-19-4) vs. Tampa Bay (23-21-2)

(12:00 p.m. ET, TV: FSN NY | Radio: Bloomberg 1130) It's the first afternoon game of the season for the Islanders as they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning on Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Nassau Coliseum.

The Islanders will try to earn points four consecutive games after earning two points against the Rangers and Boston Bruins and one point against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.

For over 58 minutes, the Devils and Islanders played an even game with neither Rick DiPietro nor Martin Brodeur willing to give an inch. But with less than two minutes left in regulation, John Madden scored what appeared to be the game winner.

With time winding down, the Islanders desperately tried to get the equalizer. And with just over ten seconds remaining Devils defenseman Brian Rafalski was called for holding. It set up a faceoff in the Devils' defensive zone. Off the ensuing draw, Madden tried to sit on the puck, but the Islanders jarred it loose. Viktor Kozlov and Tom Poti both helped tap the puck towards the net to Miroslav Satan, who instinctively swept it past Martin Brodeur with .7 seconds left in regulation to tie the score.

Unfortunately, for the Islanders a giveaway led to a Scott Gomez goal in the overtime and a 2-1 win for the Devils. It was the third game in a row the Islanders garnered a point.

The Islanders will try for points in four games when they host the Lightning, who have won four games in a row. A win against Tampa Bay would tie the Islanders with the Lightning for eighth in the conference. The Islanders have played 44 games compared to the Lightning's 46.

Tampa Bay started off their  four-game winning streak on January 7 with back-to-back 3-2 wins over the Pittsburgh Penguins. They followed those wins up with a 5-4 win over Washington and most recently a 3-2 victory against Eastern Conference leader Buffalo.

Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier have been the dominant forces on offense, both tallying 60 points on the season.

Head coach John Tortorella has elected to go with Johan Holmqvist lately, despite signing Marc Denis in the off-season. Denis was the number one goalie for Columbus last season. Denis did win the most recent game against Buffalo, but Holmqvist was the starter for the three previous wins.

Chris King and Steve Mears have the call on Bloomberg Radio 1130 while Howie Rose and Billy Jaffe can be seen tonight on FSNY Network.
