GAME PREVIEW
Islanders vs. Buffalo

(7:00 p.m. ET, TV: FSN NY | Radio: Bloomberg 1130) The Islanders will faceoff against their second division leader in two nights when they host the Northeast Division-leading Buffalo Sabres tonight at the Nassau Coliseum.

Just 5:35 into last night's game, the Islanders found themselves down 3-0 to the Southeast-leading Atlanta Thrashers. Instead of panicking, the Islanders slowly chipped away at the lead until they finally knotted the score at three on Jason Blake's second-period goal. After falling behind one more time, the Islanders tied it when Freddy Meyer's slap pass from the point was deflected in by Chris Campoli for his first goal of the season in the third period.

The Islanders eventually lost 5-4 in overtime when Ilya Kovalchuk wristed one home 2:59 into the extra frame, but they did earn a point despite the dismal start. Mike Dunham had a note-worthy game in net, stopping 26 of 28 shots in relief of Rick DiPietro.

The Islanders go from one daunting challenge to the next, as they take on the Sabres, who have already defeated the Islanders twice this season. In two contests against Buffalo, the Islanders have managed only one goal, and that came off Blake's stick on January 1.

For much of the first half of the season, the Sabres were rolling. In January, they have hit a bit of snag and have played under .500 hockey for the month. They've lost consecutive games three times this month; something they did only once in the prior months.

Like Islanders, the Sabres also played last night, losing to the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2. The Sabres were up 2-1 going into the third period, but goals by Rostislav Klesa and Dan Fritsche made it 3-2 Columbus. That was the second time all season the Sabres failed to earn a point when leading after two periods. The Islanders have yet to lose in regulation after leading after two periods.

The Islanders will be celebrating 1972 Retro Night tonight. In honor of the inaugural 1972-73 season, the players will dress in 1972 replica jerseys. The 1972-73 jerseys are the rarest in Islanders history because they were only worn for the inaugural season.

Ed Westfall, the Islanders' first captain will drop the ceremonial puck and 1972-73 members -- Gerry Hart, Bobby Nystrom and Garry Howatt will be in the building, while Jean Potvin will help with the FSN NY telecast.

Tonight is also the start of the second installment of the Havoc Energy Zone. All students are encouraged to get to the building at least 90 minutes before the game starts to get the best possible seats for only $19.

Chris King and Steve Mears have the call on Bloomberg Radio 1130, while Howie Rose and Billy Jaffe can be seen tonight on FSN NY.
