(7:00 p.m. ET, TV: MSG| Radio: Bloomberg 1130) The Islanders continue their stretch against highly ranked opponents when they return to Atlanta on Thursday to take on the Thrashers for the second time in a less than a week to begin the month of February.
Since returning from the All-Star break, the Islanders have earned points in each of their three games, including their 5-4 overtime loss to the Thrashers in Atlanta on Friday.
The Islanders picked up only one point against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday after taking a 3-0 leading into the third period. The Islanders eventually fell in 4-3 in overtime.
Mike Sillinger, Andy Hilbert and Trent Hunter each extended their point streaks to four games in the game against Detroit. The line of Sillinger, Hunter and Hilbert has had an incredible month of January. The line combined for 33 points and a +23 in 13 games, while often playing against the opponents™ top line.
Brendan Witt made an effective return to the lineup, playing 26:58, while finishing with a +3 rating and seven blocked shots.
Since the Islanders last played Atlanta, the Thrashers have lost and won a game. On Saturday, they fell 2-1 to the last-place Philadelphia Flyers, who were riding a nine-game losing streak.
The Thrashers followed up their loss with a win over the Atlantic Division-leading New Jersey Devils by the score of 5-4 in a shootout. Marian Hossa and Slava Kozlov scored in the shootout to seal the victory for Atlanta. Ilya Kovalchuk scored two goals in the game to extend his goal-scoring streak to four and his point streak to six.
Hossa is tied for second in the league with 31 goals, while Kovalchuk is tied for seventh with 29 tallies.
